It was a few weeks later, and I had gotten a job as a librarian in Evergreen. I was packing up what I needed, which wasn’t much, hoping this would be a fresh start. It wasn’t like I wanted to completely break away from my life, but I needed a clean slate even if it was only temporary.

“Stacy?”

I turned around to see my dad standing at my door. Things had been a little odd between us for the past couple of weeks. I had told my family that I was leaving for a new job, and they had a flurry of reactions. They eventually settled on being happy for me. We had a small family celebration that included Anna’s family, and we all got to say goodbye.

My dad, on the other hand, it felt like he knew the real reason I was leaving. I couldn’t figure out how he found out, but Alpha’s just knew things. He always just knew.

“Hi, dad.”

“Are you all packed?”

“Almost. There isn’t much, so yeah.”

He nodded, and I was expecting more, but both of us seemed to be choked up.

“Well, have a good drive. And good luck in the new town.”

Dad turned away and went back downstairs. I understood the reaction. If I was him, and it was my daughter in love with a member of a rival pack that was attacking my town, I too would not know what to do.

I gathered all of my things and said a quick goodbye to my family. It was time for me to start over. Maybe Joshua would return to me, maybe he wouldn’t, but I couldn’t wait around depressed, allowing my life to go nowhere. I needed this. I was making the right decision.
